Basic course in cable fault location (EN)

Objectives

The location of cable faults continues to present new challenges for measurement engineers. This seminar aims to teach participants the basic principles of the various measurement technologies and how to apply them in practice.

Content covered in the course

How do I locate a cable fault?

Overview of the process and detailed insights into the various measurement methods

  • Methodology of cable fault location
  • Basic principles of transmission line theory – cable structure
  • What are the different types of cable faults?
  • Cable testing with DC and VLF 0.1 Hz
  • Basic principles of reflection measurement (TDR)
  • Cable faults – pre-location with electric arc surge method (SIM/MIM and ARM)
  • Cable fault pin-pointing with SIM/MIM method
  • Reliable cable identification
  • Cable sheath testing and sheath fault location
  • Formulation of a general flow chart for cable testing and cable fault location

Seminar documentation

All participants will receive a copy of the BAUR cable fault location application guide, the presentation materials, and a certificate of attendance from BAUR.

Standard-compliant safety training in accordance with DGUV I 203 048

All courses in cable fault location offer the option of attending safety training in accordance with DGUV I 203 048 (DIN VDE 0104/0105). The content is suitable for operators of measuring devices for cable testing, cable fault location, and cable diagnostics.

These training courses satisfy the legal requirement for annual refresher training. Participants will be able to assess and evaluate the operation of temporary test installations (cable test vans) with regard to technical, organisational, and personal safety measures and precautions.
